Central West End's Former "Liberty Hospital" Under Redevelopment

At Taylor and Washington is the former Liberty Hospital Building. The building's address is 4500 Washington Boulevard.

The structure has been vacant for some time and is one of the few remaining vacant buildings in the Central West End neighborhood.

A post on LinkedIn from MBG (Midas Building Group) reveals what the future holds for this modest brick strucutre. Planned for the building are:

  • 31 apartments

  • Community room dedicated to veterans

  • A Recreated Citizens for Community Improvement office as a neighborhood hub

HDA Architects is serving as the design firm for the project.

At the March 2026 LCRA meeting, the Board advanced a blighting study and incentive package. The incentive package is for a 10-year tax abatement, but the exact amount abated isn't detailed in the LCRA packet. The incentive package is su[pported by 9th Ward Alderman Micael Browning, who represents this area.

On April 9th 2026, I observed crews with Spirtas Wrecking clearing the neigboring parcel on Washington Boulevard and removing trash from the building.

The redevelopment of the former Liberty Hospital is the latest project in the Central West End. Other ongoing, or proposed projects, include Albion West End, a new building on the Boy Scouts site on West Pine, a proposal at 490 North Kingshighway, and a pending plan for the Optimist site at Lindell and Taylor. A proposed apartment building at Delmar and Euclid is on hold.

The gallery below features pictures of the building on April 9th 2026.
