AC Clayton Hotel Redesigned

Updated: Feb 5, 2019

Updated on February 5th to reflect new renderings.

A new design has been presented by Homebase Partners, of Bozeman Montana, to the Clayton Architectural Review Board. The hotel, to be built on the former Clayton Police HQ site, was unveiled last year. Since then, the old Police HQ has been put under contract by Homebase and a new design has been presented, which is seen here. It is noticeably simpler than the previous iteration and eliminates a ton of the brick façade that was originally planned. It will now be mostly stucco paneling facing South Central Avenue.

Besides the façade revision, the street level experience has gotten friendlier for pedestrians. Originally, a planned curb cut and entry way, presumably for a drop off zone, has been eliminated in the new plans along with a street level glass façade continuing further North than before. All of these design revisions were spearheaded by newly hired architecture firm, the DLR Group of Chicago. DLR replaces Johnson Nathan Strohe (JNS) of Denver as the lead architect on this project.

The AC Hotel's make up is the same as it was before, but in case you don't know how it was laid out, here are the uses...

  • Floor 1: Lobby and commons areas.

  • Floors 2-10: 206 Guestrooms

  • Floor 11: Meeting Space and Rooftop Bar

An express elevator will whisk the general public to the rooftop bar while 2 other elevators serve the guest room floors.

The $43 Million hotel is still expected to begin in the Spring and could wrap up in Late 2020. Construction will begin with the demolition of the existing old Police Headquarters (HQ) and from there will see the new building rise.

Across town, Homebase is still eyeing a Quarter 1 Start on the AC Hotel on York Avenue in the Central West End. That project is being codeveloped by Sam Koplar but with the hiring of DLR as the architect on this project, it makes me wonder whether or not JNS's design for the Central West End AC Hotel will remain the same. I guess we will see soon enough.

The new Clayton AC hotel design will go before the Architectural Review Board on February 19th.
